Our HistoryRMIS is a non-profit incorporated society under the Society's Act. RMIS wishes to thank:
In 2000 the Province of BC saw that high speed radio internet was needed and that wireless internet could blanket rural areas but would be expensive and require micro-management of the individual radio. Telus did not want to get involved in the area because they could not make a profit. In 2005 the CRTC received $600,000 from Telus to be divided among 30 villages applying out of a list of hundreds of communities. Each applicant was to invite a private company or a non profit to be its “Champion” and set up high speed internet tower. In addition the Province arranged that Telus' fibre optic wires be terminated at the internet tower at the expense of Telus. POP stands for Point of Presence. POP means an interface between a communications company and a client. RMIS was formed as a non-profit society and designated by the Silverton Council to apply for the Telus grant and receive the POP. The question was where to put the POP. Silverton in a valley is not a location for towers which are seen on mountain tops or tall structures. To solve the problem a location 1,000 feet above Silverton off Red Mtn. Road had a tower which they offered to RMIS. During 2010, RMIS will have its own tower thanks to a Provincial Grant. There are five volunteer directors and two paid technicians that are available to install and fix technical problems as they arise.
