Our Mission

The Red Mountain Internet Society's mission is to deliver reliable high speed internet to the population of the Slocan Valley for the lowest price.  We are happy to have your business and hope you enjoy many years using our internet service.

Thank you for choosing RMIS, your local service provider.

Notice Board:

You will need to know your RMIS email / user name (same thing) and your temporary password; our service person will have given you these once your have the equipment installed.

For repair or technical assistance, please call Parasun first at 1-866-534-9803.  They are available 24/7.

If loss of internet occurs due to bad weather, loss of power, or any anomaly, try rebooting your computer.  If that doesn't work, you may have to 'Power Cycle' your internet radio and router, then restart your computer.  It is very important this be done in the following order:

1) Shut down your your computer completely

2) Unplug your internet radio and router.  Make sure these are the power supply plugs, NOT the data plugs

3) Wait 30 seconds and plug in our internet radio

4) Wait another 30 seconds, and plug in your router

5) Wait a final 30 seconds, and start your computer

Because RMIS has an on-site generator, the service remains active even when the town's power goes down.  Before any planned interruption of service for maintenance, we will send you an email.  It is important you provide us with your current active email.  You can give this to your installer to be entered on your installation work order. You can also email it to us at larrylavan@gmail.com.

If the problem turns out at your end and the radio is working perfectly, RMIS must pass the cost of repair on to the customer at $50 / hour.

Punctuality of payment: Invoices will be emailed to every client monthly, unless you request otherwise.  They will be due payable by the end of that given month.  You must also pay for all months you are not active or away, unless you make special arrangements before your prolonged absence by calling Larry at 250-358-2191.

Late Charge:  A fee of $3.00 will be charged monthly for overdue accounts.

Reconnection Charge:  Clients with accounts that are more than two months overdue will be disconnected until the account is brought up to date.  A reconnection charge of $50.00 will then be applied.

Bandwidth Over-usage Charge: See the four packages below, whichever you have chosen.  It is your duty to stay within the given parameters.  The charge for over usage is $3.00 per GB over your package.  Clients are welcome to increase their packages if they find the package they are on is insufficient for their desired use.

Go to our bandwidth monitors page on this site ( http://www.redmtn.ca/bandwidth_monitors.htm ) to monitor your bandwidth (your gigabyte usage) so you do not exceed your package limitation.  User name is your redmtn.ca email address, and your default password is the one given to you by our service person.

We understand that new clients may need a small amount of time to figure out the amount of bandwidth needed.  If you are in doubt or have any questions, call us.

Please read our Acceptable Use Policy ( http://www.redmtn.ca/Acceptable%20Use%20Policy.htm ) which must be abided by when using our internet service.

Credit Cards - Unfortunately, due to extremely high administration fees, we can no longer accept credit cards.

Our History

RMIS is a non-profit incorporated society under the Society's Act.

RMIS wishes to thank:

  • NETWORK BC

  • COLUMBIA BASIN TRUST

  • TELUS CORPORATION

  • Slocan Valley Economic Development Commission

  • VILLAGE OF SILVERTON

  • RDCK (The Regional District)

In 2000 the Province of BC saw that high speed radio internet was needed and that wireless internet could blanket rural areas but would be expensive and require micro-management of the individual radio. Telus did not want to get involved in the area because they could not make a profit. In 2005 the CRTC received $600,000 from Telus to be divided among 30 villages applying out of a list of hundreds of communities. Each applicant was to invite a private company or a non profit to be its “Champion” and set up high speed internet tower. In addition the Province arranged that Telus' fibre optic wires be terminated at the internet tower at the expense of Telus. POP stands for Point of Presence. POP means an interface between a communications company and a client.

RMIS was formed as a non-profit society and designated by the Silverton Council to apply for the Telus grant and receive the POP. The question was where to put the POP. Silverton on the lake's edge was not a location for towers which are seen on many mountain tops. To solve the problem, a location 1,000 feet above Silverton off Red Mtn. Road had a tower which they offered to RMIS. During 2010, RMIS will have its own tower thanks to a Provincial Grant. There are five volunteer directors and two paid technicians that are available to install and fix technical problems as they arise.
